Why This Matters
Every asset on a company's balance sheet was funded by someone. Either the owners put up the money (equity) or someone lent it (debt). The debt ratio answers one precise question: what percentage of the company's assets were funded by creditors rather than owners?
A debt ratio of 20% means creditors own a claim on 20 cents of every dollar of assets. An 80% debt ratio means creditors have a claim on 80 cents of every dollar โ leaving equity holders with only 20 cents of every dollar as their buffer.
